Rachel Texidor loves the opportunity to help others, and as co-president of the Hollywood Hills High School National Honor Society (NHS) she has plenty of opportunities to do so.

“We tutor students who are having difficulties in their academic work. We have helped students pass their classes,” said Texidor.

Helping students who are dealing with academic problems can be difficult but rewarding. “Tutoring can be hard. I first had to review some of the material. I was able to help students and relate to them in a way that teachers may not have been able to,” said Texidor.

Many of the tutoring sessions take place in the Hollywood Hills High School library. A group of NHS students will patiently help their classmates master academic material. But that’s not the only thing going on at Hollywood Hills.

Another program is the Angel Tree. NHS students will get the name of child from disadvantaged circumstances. The NHS member will buy the child a toy.

“I would not want a child to not have a Christmas present and I am happy to help a child get a toy. We receive suggestions of a gift a child might want,” said Natasha Gurdyal, an NHS member.

The Hollywood Hills High School NHS is also involved in Becca’s Closet, a program that helps high school girls who are facing financial challenges obtain formal wear for proms.

And NHS members are selling bracelets with the statement “No Means No,” written on them. This sale will benefit victims of sexual abuse.

Irene Calhoun, an NHS member said she is pleased to be a part of the organization. “I like representing the school in a positive way. I like being a part of the Angel Tree program,” said Calhoun.

The NHS will hold a pizza party for students who have achieved a 4.0 GPA in the previous academic quarter.

To become a member of the NHS takes effort. One must have a strong GPA, have leadership status in a school club and have two teachers write a letter of recommendation. The NHS focuses on academics, good character, leadership and community service, according to Dr. Iris Payan, NHS sponsor at Hollywood Hills High School.

Members of the NHS are bright and motivated students and they want to make a positive difference in the community. With the preparation they receive at Hollywood Hills, students are ready and up to the task.
