New art is coming to Hollywood. The Intersection Crosswalk Artwork Project will mean colorful art at four intersections in Hollywood.

It is a pilot project, and if it is successful it may be placed throughout the city.

It is part of an effort to improve the overall appearance of downtown Hollywood. There will be four murals painted at intersections, two on Van Buren Street at the intersections of 19th Avenue and 20th Avenue, and two on Polk Street at 19th and 20th Avenue.

Jill Weisberg, project manager for the Mural Project, is excited about this project. “This will improve the appearance of downtown,” she said. “It is public art and enhances the downtown experience. It attracts people and makes the downtown a desirable destination.”

Four artistic designs were selected. Artists from around Florida were encouraged to submit designs. The designs selected include abstract pattern based art, sea creatures; turtles and fish, a circular theme, and symbols such as smiling faces and musical notes.

The Artwork Project will request financial support from the Hollywood Commission at an upcoming meeting. It will cost about $75,000 to paint the artwork on the streets.

The paint is very durable and can withstand cars and trucks and harsh weather conditions.

The Mural Project has been very successful and has attracted attention to downtown Hollywood. There are 26 murals in downtown Hollywood and three more are in development. Weisberg works with property owners and artists to create powerful and attractive murals.

The artists selected to have their work displayed at the intersections include Alejandro Villaneuva, Laureen Biruk, Karla Campos, and Antonella Anzani Ballarin.
