Mayor Josh Levy and members of the Hollywood Commission were among leaders of the local Jewish community who participated in a tree planting ceremony to celebrate Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish New Year of the Trees, at Mara Berman Giuliant Park on February 1.

The group planted a Gumbo Limbo tree, donated by the Jewish National Fund.  Lior Haiat, Consul General of Israel in Miami, spoke at the event.   “This is a special holiday. We are celebrating a New Year of the Trees. We put effort into the trees and enjoy the fruits of the trees.”

Haiat said he enjoys being in Hollywood. “This tree is a symbol of friendship between Hollywood and Israel. I feel at home in Hollywood,” he said.

Mayor Josh Levy spoke and said he enjoyed the event. “It is always special to plant a tree,” he said.

The Jewish National Fund has led an effort to plant trees in Israel, as planting a tree is considered a symbol of the future.  So far the organization has planted about 26 million trees in Israel. The planting of this tree was presented by the Consulate General of Israel in Miami and the Jewish National Fund-South Florida in partnership with the City of Hollywood.
