Aunjilee Phillips enjoyed the Tamara James Family Fun Day at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Her daughter Payton received a backpack full of school supplies. She and other children enjoyed chance to socialize and have some fun.
“This is beautiful. It is good that children receive a backpack and school supplies before the first day of school,” said Phillips.
Lourdes Gonzalez, the principal of Hollywood Hills High School and other teachers and administrators participated in the Fun Day. “This is good for the community. The children receive school supplies and they have the tools the need for success on the first day of school.”
The event included a basketball activity and a lunch of barbecue hot dogs and hamburgers. Children could enjoy ice cream. There were inflatable slides and a DJ. The South Broward High School Marching Band performed. About 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were given away to the students. And it was a fun social event.
Tamara James, a young community leader considered the event a success. “I love my community and I want to help the kids here. I want the children here to be successful.”
James knows about success. She a top basketball player at South Broward and played on three state championship teams. She was a very successful basketball player at the University of Miami and then played professional basketball. “I grew up here and I want to give back to my community,” said James.
