Isabella Glazer and Gabriella Glazer, students at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, are being raised by their grandparents. As such, they understand some of the challenges faced by young people who are being raised by people other than their biological parents.
Wanting to reach out to children like them, they created Bella’s Kinship Group, a non-profit support group which works with other organizations in the community, such as Forever Family and Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth (HANDY), to host fun events for the children, some of whom live in foster care or with other relatives. “We are doing this because we want to help children. There are about 40,000 kids in Broward County who are being raised by people who are not their natural parents,” said Isabella Glazer. “We want to help them.”
Bella’s Group collaborates with the other organizations to provide about four parties a year for the children, including a Christmas party and bowling and skating parties. They also give the children who are going into foster care a Bella’s Bag, each of which contains basic personal care items.
