Broward teachers soon to receive salary increases

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and the Broward Teachers Union (BTU) reached a tentative agreement regarding teacher salary increases after four months of bargaining.

The tentative agreement, which must be ratified by employees covered by the Teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement and subsequently approved by the School Board, reflects an investment by BCPS of approximately $20 million in the 2014/15 school year for teacher salary increases.

“We value our teachers and their dedication to providing our students with a world-class education,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie.  “We are excited to have reached this agreement and look forward to providing our teachers with their well-deserved salary increases.”

“We want to thank all the education professionals of Broward County Public Schools for their patience and unquestioned commitment to teaching throughout negotiations. As advocates for all educators, BTU is pleased that teachers are close to receiving their long-awaited raises,” said BTU President Sharon Glickman. “I want to commend both parties for their continued willingness to work towards a deal.”

Some of the major points of the agreement are that teachers on the Grandfathered Salary, will receive an average salary increase of $1,300 for the 2014/15 school year. 

Teachers on Pay for Performance, who were rated Highly Effective overall, will receive a 4.26% salary increase in the 2014/15 school year.

Teachers on Pay for Performance, who were rated Effective overall, will receive a 2.13% salary increase in the 2014/15 school year. The starting salary for Teachers on Pay for Performance, who were hired after July 1, 2014, will increase to $40,000 in the 2014/15 school year. 

To provide equity for teachers on Pay for Performance, who were hired prior to July 1, 2014, the District will align their salaries with those on the Grandfathered Salary Schedule and ensure the minimum salary is $40,000.

Upon successful ratification and School Board approval, the District will work to provide the agreed upon salary increases as soon as possible.  All salary increases will be retroactive to July 1, 2014.
