Cardboard Boat Race set for Oct. 18

Families who want to have some fun won’t want to miss the Sixth Annual Cardboard Boat Race.

The race will be held at the City of Hollywood Marina on October 18. Those who participate must use a cardboard boat. People can begin building the boats at 8:00 a.m. and the race will start at 1:00 p.m. The race itself will be about 100 yards.

“This is a safe, family oriented event. It is a fun way for families to get out and spend time together. We will have music and food available,” said Scott Gebhard, dockmaster at the Hollywood Marina.

People can create a basic cardboard boat or they can get creative. Some boats are decorated along pirate themes or other fun themes. Trophies are awarded for the winner, the most team spirit and the most spectacular sinking.

Usually about 200 people participate and there are about 30 boats. The boats people build can usually hold about three to five people.
