Chaminade-Madonna has won the Florida 3A state championship in high school football. The Lions defeated Oxbridge Academy 31 to 28 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on December 9.  This was the school’s first state football title since 2005.

Daniel Longman kicked the winning field goal with 4 seconds left in the game. Shaun Shivers, who has committed to Auburn next year, rushed for 216 yards and scored two touchdowns. He has 2,241 rushing yards for the season. Quarterback Daelen Menard had 144 yards passing and threw two touchdown passes.

Hollywood Commissioner Traci Callari went to the game in Orlando. She was impressed by the effort of Chaminade-Madonna and said it was a good game.

It should be noted that Chaminade-Madonna played a very, very tough schedule and was very successful. One of the Lions’ losses came to American Heritage, which won the 5A Florida State Championship.

Many players from Chaminade-Madonna will be playing division one college football next season, such as Xavier Williams who will play for Alabama.

Prior to the championship, the Lions won the Class 3A semi-final game by defeating Clearwater Central Catholic 49 to 3. Some of the highlights included plays by Chaminade-Madonna quarterback Daelen Menand to Akeem Hayes, Marvin Alexander, Xavier Williams and Shaun Shivers. Menard completed five passes with 206 yards passing. Shivers scored a touchdown on a 76 yard run and rushed for 163 yards. Thad Franklin had a 37 yard touchdown run and Carlton Williams had a 67 yard touchdown run for the Lions. Chaminade-Madonna had a 10-2 record going into the state final game.

Xavier Williams, considered to be one of the best wide receivers in the nation, will play for Alabama next year. Akeem Hayes, a wide receiver, Davoan Hawkins, a defensive tackle and Marvin Alexander will play for Kentucky.  Sebastian Sainterling, an offensive lineman, will play for the University of South Florida and Marlin Mayo, a junior wide receiver, has committed to Tennessee.

Chaminade Madonna coaches stand in front of the players. The coaches and players have come together as a family and are preparing for the game against Oxbridge Academy.

The Chaminade-Madonna coaches are thrilled with the team this year.   Tyler Tate, the offensive coordinator,  said, “It feels great to be going to the state championship. The players believed in each other and the coaches. We have become a family.”

Travis Harmon, the offensive line coach and a former player on the Chaminade-Madonna team himself, said the line players have done very well. The offensive line players may not get as much recognition as a quarterback or running back, but they get a great sense of satisfaction when they “pancake” or totally dominate a defensive player, he believes.

“We have a great group of offensive line players and they are committed to the team. They have made it easier for Shaun Shivers to be successful,” said Harmon.

The coaches and the players on this year’s team have been very successful. They are proud to have competed against and defeated some of the strongest teams in South Florida.
