City of Hollywood Celebrates Black History Month

As part of its celebration of Black History Month, officially proclaimed by the Hollywood Commission at its early February meeting, the City of Hollywood African American Advisory Council, in coordination with Barry University Center for Community Service Initiatives and Liberia Economic and Social Development Inc., is hosting a two-night Black History Month event this February.  Other events include a Presentation & Panel with honored veterans discussing “African Americans in Wartime” and the 2nd Annual “Talented 10th Poetry Slam” Spoken Word Competition.

 

“African Americans in Wartime Presentation & Panel Discussion” was held on Thursday, February 8 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at City Hall.  The panel included U.S. Army veterans Willie Brinson, William Frazier, Dr. Miya Burt-Stewart, Loretta Young and Robert “Bobby” White. Representing the United States Air Force was Dr. Sheila Chamberlain and Charles James, and representing the United States Marine Corps was Author Wells. The public was invited to attend and take part in the discussion.

The Hollywood Hills High School Army JROTC performed at a Black History Month event to honor African American military veterans on February 8.

On Thursday, February 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at City Hall, area middle and high school students will be competing for prizes as they perform original spoken word compositions at the “2nd Annual Talented 10th Poetry Slam Spoken Word Competition.” Poems are now being accepted for the Slam with the first place winner receiving an iPad Mini. The second place winner will receive a Samsung tablet and the third place winner will receive a Kindle tablet courtesy of Liberia Economic and Social Development and AT&T Pioneers. This spoken word performance is open to the public and all are invited to attend.
