The McArthur High School Cross Country team is anticipating a good season. Coach Cecil Mayers said the team is the best in the Hollywood area and that some of the team members could qualify for the regional and state meets.
“We have a good team this year and should do well. It takes a lot of dedication to do well in cross country. One has to love running and be willing to run during the summer heat,” said Mayers. “We have a strong emphasis on personal fitness.”
Mayers has been a teacher at McArthur High School for more than 25 years and also coaches the track team in the spring.
Jessy Silfort, a junior and one of the top runners on the team said, “It takes a lot of work to succeed in cross-country. We run about eight miles a day,” he said.
Kenneth Dames agreed. “I love running and I come and run every day. You have to be willing to run a lot to be good,” he said.
