ToggleI learned something recently while reading my newspaper on the train that I want to share with you.
Did you know that Facebook is the most popular social media platform in Colombia?
I was surprised too when I read that, as Facebook is kind of losing popularity in most other countries.
So I dug deep into the internet and found as many Facebook statistics about Facebook users in Colombia, and compiled them in this blog post.
Overview of Facebook Usage in Colombia
In Colombia, Facebook is the most popular social media platform, with 35.15 million users. According to Meta data, up to 69 percent of the population were monthly active social media users as of January 2020. It’s no surprise that Facebook is the most used social network in Colombia among active users, with a staggering 95 percent.
Additionally, it has the highest penetration rate compared to other countries in South America, with 81.3% of the population being active on social media. This is slightly higher than the U.S., which has a penetration rate of 80.9%.
36 Million Colombian Users on Facebook
It’s no surprise that Facebook is the most popular social network in Colombia, with 36 million users. That’s a huge number, and it’s indicative of how much Colombians rely on social media to stay connected. It’s also worth noting that YouTube is not far behind, with 29.9 million users – a testament to the power and reach of the platform.
YouTube is an incredibly powerful tool for connecting with people around the world and creating meaningful content. From funny videos to educational ones, there’s something for everyone on YouTube, and it’s no wonder that so many Colombians are turning to it for entertainment and information.
In my opinion, that’s a huge number because I learned that the population of Colombia is 50 million people. It’s crazy to think that Mark Zuckerberg changed Colombian culture so much and that so many people, like myself and my girlfriend, are using this app on a daily basis.

As well as offering entertainment, social media like Facebook can be a great way to stay connected with friends and family, especially in a country like Colombia where the population is spread out. As of January 2020, there were 35.15 million Facebook users in Colombia, according to extrapolations from data from Facebook’s self-service advertising tools. This is an impressive figure given that Colombia has a population of just over 49 million people. This means that about 71% of the population is using Facebook, which is an impressive figure.
Additionally, 92% of Colombians reported visiting Facebook last month and 89% report having used WhatsApp, indicating that social media use is quite high among Colombian citizens. It’s clear that Facebook has become an integral part of life for many Colombians, and it’s only continuing to grow in popularity.
That’s a lot of people, right? What do you think? I think that in my opinion it’s almost pretty much every single person that lives in this country, except the older age group which don’t know how to use smartphones.
Facebook Penetration Rate in Colombia
In addition to its popularity, Facebook also has an impressive penetration rate in Colombia. According to Meta data, the social network had a penetration rate of 83.2% in June 2022. This means that almost every Colombian is using Facebook, making it an essential tool for reaching out to the local population and engaging with them online. Furthermore, this penetration rate is slightly higher than the U.S. with 80.9%.
Trends of Facebook Usage in Colombia
The popularity of Facebook in Colombia has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Last month, 92% of Colombians said they visited Facebook, and 89% report having used WhatsApp. Over 8 in 10 worry about how their data is being used by Facebook and other social media platforms.
According to the General Media Study in Colombia, besides Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, Colombians most used digital services are Google, YouTube, Gmail and other search engine. Data published in Meta’s advertising resources indicates that Facebook had 35.15 million users in Colombia in early 2022. This data is updated in March, 2022. It is clear that Facebook is the most popular social media platform in Colombia.
It’s also the most famous social media platform in my house, because all my kids and my wife are using Facebook, a little bit too often in my opinion as well! I prefer to do activities outdoors with my family, but I do agree that FB is a great tool for communicating with my Colombian business partners.
Number of Pinterest Users in Colombia
The number of Pinterest users in Colombia has increased rapidly over the past few years. According to Statista, there were over 1.8 million people in Colombia who were active on Pinterest as of October 2020. This is a massive increase from the 1.2 million users reported in 2019.
The majority of these users are female, with the female population accounting for 62% of total users. More than half of the Colombian population using Pinterest is aged between 25 and 34 years old, suggesting that this platform is popular among younger generations.
In my country, I realized that female Facebook users are getting less and less frequent, as most females prefer to use Instagram to take photos and get more followers.
Facebook Usage Statistics for Colombia
The statistics show that Facebook is by far the most popular social media platform in Colombia. According to Meta data, 35.15 million Colombians are active users of Facebook, with 32 million of those users being active monthly. Interestingly, the gender split between male and female users is relatively equal, with 51.5% of users being female and 48.5% being male.
Additionally, it appears that Facebook is more popular than other social media platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitter in Colombia. This data provides us with a good understanding of the “state of digital” in Colombia in 2021, allowing us to make informed decisions about our marketing and advertising efforts.
I found a lot of these statistics on the Statistica website, but I also found more on many other platforms on the internet as I was searching for many blog posts for more than 7 hours last night to compile info for this article that I am writing right now.
Popularity of Facebook in Colombia
Facebook is an incredibly popular social media platform in Colombia, with over 35 million users. This makes it the most popular social media in the country, with a penetration rate of 92%. Not only is it popular among Colombians, but the demographics of its users show that 51.5% are women, and 48.5% are men.
What’s more, Facebook has become an integral part of eCommerce in the country, with many companies using it to promote their products and services. With global growth expected to decelerate in 2023, Colombia’s GDP is expected to follow a similar path, making Facebook an even more important platform for businesses in the region.
Instagram vs. Facebook in Colombia
It is clear that Facebook remains the most popular social media in Colombia with 35.15 million users, compared to Instagram’s 18.30 million users. However, it is worth noting that while Facebook continues to be the most used social media platform among Colombians, Instagram is catching up quickly. According to the latest figures, the number of Instagram users has grown by over 8 million in the last year, suggesting that the platform is becoming increasingly popular among Colombians.
Furthermore, a larger percentage of users are women than men on Instagram, showing that it is a particularly attractive platform for women in Colombia. All in all, it will be interesting to see which platform continues to grow in popularity among Colombians in the coming years.
Personally, I see why Instagram is more popular than Facebook in Colombia, because I found it so much more easy to use, and it’s faster to reach the “search page” to search for new images, like coffee shops, or places to go for sunset etc…
I hope that you enjoyed reading about these Facebook statistics that I compiled for you in this blog post.
