Thursday, January 31, Florida Rep. Shevrin Jones will speak with Hollywood residents about important issues facing South Florida at the Boulevard Heights Community Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event will be free to the public and is just one stop on Jones’s five-part listening tour, where he will join local government officials to meet with constituents. On Thursday, he will be joined by Hollywood Commissioner Kevin Biederman.
“I think it’s a good idea; I think all representatives should do it,” said Biederman, “It’s always good to meet with residents.”
On this tour, Jones’s main goal is to gain a better understanding of the changes people want to see in their community.
“I want what all representatives want for their constituents, which is basically for them to be allowed to have their voices and opinions heard,” said Jones.
When constituents bring up key issues, representatives can address them more effectively, so Jones wants his constituents to know that he is approachable and that they can tell him what they
need.
“Our positions as legislators grant us this amazing opportunity to actualize the desires of our constituents, and that’s important. I think my desire to see that aspect of my job out to the fullest was the biggest motivator for me to do this year’s listening tour,” said Jones.
Jones also plans to speak about issues he sees as important, such as the proposed HB49 Dignity of Incarcerated Women Act, which seeks to promote the availability of feminine hygiene products for women in prison, and perpetual road construction and lack of maintenance.
However, as this is a listening tour, Jones will mainly focus the wants and needs of residents. “They [community members] are the job. Listening to their concerns and the problems that they have to face every day and figuring out what I can do in the capital to make their lives a little bit easier is my job.” said Jones.
In the coming weeks, he will be visiting locations in West Park, Miramar, Hallandale Beach, and Pembroke Pines. Call his local office at (954) 893-5010 for more information.
