| Due to the flooding that has occurred on Hollywood Beach during the current King Tides that began Sunday, November 24th continuing through the week, the City is opening the top three floors of both the Garfield and Nebraska Street garages on Hollywood Beach to allow beach residents and employees of beach businesses to park for free on a first come, first served basis. Parking staff is currently placing signage in the two municipal garages located on the barrier island at Garfield Street and Nevada Street directing residents and workers to the available floors for free parking within each garage. All vehicles must be parked in a legal, marked parking space and must not block any other vehicles from entering or exiting the garage. Based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) tide predictions, above average seasonal high tides, also known as King Tides, are expected to continue through Thursday, November 28th. King Tides generally occur in the fall due to the alignment of the sun, moon and earth. Local weather conditions including onshore winds and heavy rains can combine to exacerbate flooding conditions. Hollywood Police Department patrol units are assessing conditions throughout east Hollywood and the barrier island. If necessary, the Department of Public Works will place barricades on flooded streets to keep motorists from entering flooded areas. The Department of Public Utilities has deployed all of the City’s auxiliary pumps to vulnerable locations, and the Florida Department of Transportation has a pump at Oregon Street and A1A along with crews monitoring conditions on a 24/7 basis. Pedestrians should avoid walking through flood waters and motorists should follow all posted road closures and detour signs, and avoid driving through flooded areas. Normal parking operations will resume on Monday, December 2, 2019 and regular parking charges and enforcement will apply. |
