Mayor Levy and Artist Daniel Pontet Celebrate Literacy Week with Elementary HAAS Students
The Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science (HAAS), along with Hollywood’s Mayor Josh Levy and renowned artist Daniel Pontet, continued their traditional Celebration for Literacy Week with their 6th Annual Art and Reading Collaboration for the HAAS elementary students. This fun event, developed by Cindy Gwyn and Hilary Fine from HAAS, promotes the love for the Arts and Reading which is a cornerstone of the school’s arts in education integration program.
Mayor Levy and special guest Cesar Chiriboga from Art and Culture Center/Hollywood were this year’s readers, and artist Daniel Pontet created three magical murals which depicted the three stories as each page was being read. Throughout Literacy Week, students celebrated their passion for literature and writing and ended the week by dressing up as their favorite books character for the special event.
“We’re very proud to celebrate this 6th Annual Art and Reading Collaboration,” said HAAS arts director Hilary Fine, at the opening of the event. “HAAS works hard to celebrate literacy and the arts every day by promoting creative understanding, along with a love of reading and education. This incorporation of the visual and written expression reaches out to children and adults of all ages. So, it’s only natural for our community leaders to support our students through example.” What followed were ooh’s and ah’s along with exceptionally sweet questions from the elementary students. The heartfelt connection between the Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science students, their own Mayor Levy, the Art and Culture Center and the artist Daniel Pontet will remain with these students for a lifetime.
