People who want to help children in Haiti and have some fun will want to come to the Hollywood CARES event at the ArtsPark at Young Circle on January 11 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

There will be a concert in the park. There will be four bands including Locos Por Juana, Anna Palmerola, The Ryan Stone Band and The Done. There will be raffles and other fun activities. The event will be known as Hollywood Healing Haiti.

The money raised from this event will go to help support Project Papillon Orphanage & Community Youth Center in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Hollywood CARES has supported since this program since 2007. There are three homes that house about ten children each. One house is geared toward housing children who are struggling with HIV. The orphanage also has a school. Hollywood Cares also supports a youth center near the orphanage. Each year, Hollywood CARES provides about $25,000 worth of support to the orphanage and youth program in Haiti.

Hollywood CARES is run by members of Temple Beth El of Hollywood, a Reform Synagogue and First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood.

“We will go to Haiti on January 19,” said Marilyn Faber. Her husband Rabbi Allan Tuffs is the Rabbi of Temple Beth El.  “We will go with whoever chooses to go.”

There are 11 people planning to go on the trip from the synagogue and the church. Dr. Kenneth Budowsky, a pediatrician will be going on the trip.

Hollywood CARES donates money to the school and provides basic needs to the children there like shoes, tooth brushes, clothes and other needs.

“This is really a labor of love for people to help others,” said Faber

Rabbi Tuffs said, “The nice thing about Hollywood CARES is we are more than a philanthropic organization, we have a personal relationship with the children who live there and the people who run the orphanage. We go every year and we get to know them and watch them grow up,” said Tuffs. “We are like family which gives Hollywood CARES a special quality.”
