The City of Hollywood recently received a $20,000 grant from TD Green Streets to plant more trees in Hollywood Gardens West. In collaboration with community volunteers, the city held a tree planting event in an effort to increase Hollywood’s tree canopy.
Lindsey Nieratka, Hollywood’s environmental sustainability coordinator, made a presentation during a recent Hollywood Commission meeting on the program to increase the number of trees in Hollywood.
“The tree canopy provides a real tangible value. For instance, lots of trees in a neighborhood reduces traffic and energy use, helps with the management of storm water, and combats urban heat,” said Nieratka. “We encourage residents who own property to plant trees. By planting trees, homeowners can increase the value of their property.”
Nieratka is working locally to encourage residents to plant more trees. “We had a workshop and education program to show people the benefits of enhancing the tree canopy. We will have more tree planting events,” said.
Commissioner Traci Callari said she is pleased that efforts are being made to plant more trees in Hollywood. “I think this is great. Hollywood is a Tree City,” she said.
