Students at Hollywood Park Elementary School are learning about plants and gardening by actually working on a garden project.

Three gardens have been planted and about 75 students are working maintaining the gardens. There is butterfly garden that includes a wide variety of milkweed plants that help attract Monarch Butterflies And there is an edible garden that includes collards, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and garlic. There are marigolds that act as a natural protection against insects. The students will harvest the vegetables from this garden and prepared them to be used as food. There is also a herb garden.

Raquel House, a first grade teacher wanted to give her students and hands-on gardening experience. “After completing book work on gardening went out and planted gardens,” said House. “We want students to know where food comes from. We received help from master gardeners.”

Hollywood Park Elementary School received a $2,000 grant from the Broward Education Foundation to develop the garden. House hopes to plant another two gardens.

Maria Diaz, a prekindergarten teacher at Hollywood Park said she wants students to learn about nutrition by harvest food from the edible garden. “We are producing organic vegetables and It important that children learn about the importance of proper nutrition.”

Other teachers involved in the project include Eileen Santiago and Maria Diaz.
