Hollywood Police Dept. Updates Status on Rehab Center Deaths Investigation

Gov. scott shuts down rehab center at hollywood hills where eight people died wednesday; investigations underway

The Hollywood Police Department has issued an update on the criminal investigation into the circumstances that led to multiple deaths at The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in the days following Hurricane Irma.  In the first few weeks following the evacuation of the facility on September 13th, the Department released the names of 14 deceased patients who were part of the criminal investigation of the facility, pending the results of autopsies from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.  In late October, Broward County Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Craig Mallak, informed investigators that the death of patient Francesca Andrade was not caused by conditions in the nursing home and should not be linked to the other nursing home deaths under investigation.

Following additional examinations, the Medical Examiner’s office has ruled the manner of death of 12 of the 14 deceased as homicides with the cause of death attributed to environmental heat exposure.

The Hollywood Police Department will now focus its ongoing investigation into the homicide deaths of the following twelve people:

  1. Carolyn Eatherly, DOB 8-13-39
  2. Gail Nova, DOB 2-22-46
  3. Estella Hendricks, DOB 1-4-46
  4. Bobby Owens, DOB 5-16-33
  5. Miguel Franco, DOB 9-5-25
  6. Manuel Mendieta, DOB 8-26-21
  7. Albertina Vega, DOB 10-10-17
  8. Betty Hibbard, DOB 1-11-33
  9. Carlos Canal, DOB 11-4-23
  10. Martha Murray, DOB 1-10-23
  11. Dolores Biamonte, DOB 2-25-60
  12. Cecilia Franco, DOB 4-2-27

The death of resident Alice Thomas was determined by the Medical Examiner to be the result of causes other than environmental heat exposure, and is therefore no longer part of the criminal investigation.

All released and available public records are on the City of Hollywood and the Police Department’s website: www.hollywoodfl.org.   There will be no further information provided by the Hollywood Police Department or the Medical Examiner’s Office at this time.
