Hollywood police warn of prepaid card scam

The Hollywood Police Department wants all residents to be aware of the latest internet/phone scam that is become common in South Florida. It involves the purchase of prepaid cards to receive discounted DirectTV service.

Hollywood Police report that DirectTV has no knowledge of this offer and that this offer is not valid.

Hollywood Police are advising residents that this scam is coming from overseas. If anyone requests immediate payment, banking or personal information over the phone or requests you to go to the store and purchase Green Dot or MoneyPak prepaid cards to sign up for DirectTV service, it is a scam and you should not comply.

Those in doubt should call the business directly using an alternative phone number to the one supplied to verify the offer before providing any information or paying money.

For more information or you have been victimized, please call the Hollywood Police Department Economic Crimes Unit at 954-967-4411 or come to the West Network Center at 1109 North 69th Way, Hollywood.

The Office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It is open on Wednesday from noon to 8:00 p.m.
