Hollywood Remembers Former Mayor and City Commissioner Sal Oliveri

Former City of Hollywood Mayor and City Commissioner Salvatore “Sal” Oliveri peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 27th at the age of 90. Oliveri served on the Hollywood City Commission for nearly 12 years, having first been elected Mayor from 1990 to 1992, followed by 10 years as a City Commissioner, from 1998 to 2008 representing Hollywood Commission District 3.

Oliveri was born in Queens, New York on June 11, 1928. He and his late wife, Maria, moved
to Hollywood in 1960. For more than four decades, Oliveri was active in the community, his
church and his neighborhood civic association. He served as lector and Eucharistic minister
at Nativity parish, was the three time President of the Interfaith Council of Greater Hollywood as well as the Hollywood Hills Civic Association. He was also President of the local Kiwanis Club, the Benevolent Order of the Protective Elks and the Knights of Columbus. Oliveri became involved in local government after being appointed to the City of Hollywood’s Charter Review Committee and Civil Service Boards.

Prior to his election to the City Commission, Oliveri had worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 32 years and in the casualty insurance business for 7 years before his retirement.

In October of 2008, the City Commission voted to rededicate the newly created Veterans Park located at 4701 Tyler Street to be named Sal Oliveri/Veterans Park in honor of Oliveri’s
longtime service to the community. During the rededication ceremony, Oliveri stated he was truly humbled and exalted by the honor, “I feel like it’s a fitting final chapter to my loving service to the City of Hollywood. It means a lot to me to share this joy with so many of my neighbors, friends and supporters,” said Oliveri.

Oliveri is survived by his three children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
