Hollywood residents perform in Holocaust Survivor Band

Most of the people who survived the Holocaust have passed.  A small group of passionate musicians are working hard make sure it is never forgotten by sharing their talents. They have formed the Holocaust Survivor Band and have been playing at local synagogues and retirement homes for just over a year.

Some of the members were alive during the early 1940s and those who are younger had relatives who died in the Holocaust.

Julius Goldstein plays the saxophone and lives in Hollywood. He was born in New York. His parents knew what was happening in Europe and escaped before the Holocaust. But many of his relatives were not as fortunate.

“I love to play music and I love being a part of this band,” said Goldstein.

Hollywood resident Jeff Black plays the rhythm guitar and loves performing with the band and sharing his music. He was born in London and also lost relatives in the Holocaust.

Reuwen Sosnowicz plays the accordion and survived the Holocaust as a young person in Poland. He hid on a Polish farm during the period.

Drummer Saul Dreier survived the Holocaust by making water coolers for airplanes.

And Chanarose Sosnowicz is the vocalist for the band. She is the daughter of Reuwen Sosnowicz and loves performing with the band.  “For me, this is a great opportunity to share moments with my father,” said Chanarose.

During a recent performance, they performed the Israeli National Anthem and God Bless American. The band also performs popular Jewish folk songs and ‘Big Band’ favorites.
