Hollywood seeks to expand police force

People who want to pursue a law enforcement career may want to want consider the Hollywood Police Department. The department is looking for new officers.

Currently, the Hollywood Police Department has 314 sworn police officer positions.  And of that number, there are 15 vacancies.  There are a total of 27 recruits currently in the Police Academy.

As of 2014, the City of Hollywood has received 1087 applications and has hired 25 police officers.  Of that 25, five are certified sworn officers, three of those five certified officers have yet to be sworn in with the Hollywood Police Department.  The City also has 14 candidates who are in active background checks, one of the first steps to becoming an officer.

Officer recruitment typically continues on a year-round basis for the Department of Human Resources & Risk Management.  The City of Hollywood also hired a Human Resources Analyst whose main focus is Public Safety.   

An aggressive recruitment campaign has been taking place since the beginning of this year and will continue until all vacant positions are filled.  The “Serve with Honor, Join the Force” recruitment campaign has included outreach and advertising on television, radio, billboards, internet, and with professional organizations.

The Hollywood Police Department has established a number of goals. They include implementing a city-wide crime solving model and improving internal processes, best practices and morale.

Also, there will be capital improvements for crime prevention including CCTV and other crime fighting technology implemented city-wide. There will be city-wide leadership, mentoring and a succession plan. Police office vacancies will be filled.

There will be the creation of a homeless policy and the hiring of a homeless program coordinator. A homeless program coordinator candidate is currently in active background checks with the City.

The Police Department wants to hire a civilian red light camera supervisor. Another goal is the improvement of Emergency Management by implementing a CODE RED Emergency System. CODE RED was implemented in May, 2013.

The Police Department wants to recruit more volunteers for crime watch, mobile patrol and CERT. There will be more aggressive code enforcement policies and the removal of graffiti on any property, not just when in public.

Other goals including the recruiting a Professional Property Manager.  The City hired a civilian Property Manager on October 14, 2013 and hired a civilian Records Manager on November 12, 2013. Also, there will be the hiring of a Civilian Code Enforcement Manager.  The City hired a civilian Code Enforcement Manager on March, 17, 2014. Also, there will be the hiring of two new FT Code Officers.  The City hired one Code Officer on February, 3, 2014 and one Code Officer is pending transfer from the City’s Telecommunications Department, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood.
