Hollywood Teachers of the Year are honored at chamber luncheon

The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce held it’s 2016 Teacher of the Year Award Luncheon to honor teachers who were named Teacher of the Year by their respective schools. Each teacher was recognized for their accomplishments as an educator.

Lara Ruddy, a science teacher at McNicol Middle School said she was honored to receive the award. “I love the kids and I love being a teacher every day. There is no better job than to be a teacher,” said Ruddy.

Pilar Marquez, a sixth grade math teacher at Apollo Middle School loves teaching children was pleased to earn recognition as Teacher of the Year at her school. “I care for my kids and I want to help them learn math,” she said.

Raquel House, a first grade teacher was Hollywood Park Elementary School said, “It is an honor to be named Teacher of the Year. To be a good teacher takes a lot of time and effort,” she said.

Melissa Ramirez, a third grade teacher at Bethune Elementary School of the Arts said, “I was excited to win Teacher of the Year. To be a good teacher takes a lot of patience and heart. You have to love what you do,” she said.

Dr. Valerie Smith Wanza, Ph.D, chief school performance and accountability officer for Broward County Public Schools was the keynote speaker. She described some of the challenges she faced and overcame as she pursued a career in education. And she praised the teachers for working hard to help young people.
