The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities will begin its Annual Water Line Flushing Program on August 22, 2016. Flushing will continue across the City through September 16. It’s worth noting that water will remain safe to drink throughout the process.
The Annual Flushing Program helps to rid water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediment. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should settle and clear a few hours after flushing. The cloudiness is due to the sediments in the pipeline and is not harmful or hazardous.
Flushing will take place between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., when demand for water is low. During the water line flushing period, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its method of disinfection from chloramines to free chlorination. Residents may notice a change in the look and/or taste of the water during this time.
Businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of kidney dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing chloramines will not be effective during the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for free chlorine.
