Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities ®, the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) was able to spay/neuter 2,262 felines residing in the Hollywood zip code of 33020 for free.  This area has an enormous number of feral and free roaming cats; however as a result of the huge number sterilized we hope to reduce the number of unwanted kittens born which will decrease the number of felines entering local shelters.

In addition to spaying/neutering the cats each received free vaccinations, Revolution for fleas and intestinal parasites and ear notching for the ferals.

According to Mary Steffen, Senior Vice President of Operations at the HSBC, “this is a tremendous number of surgeries, and we feel very grateful to PetSmart Charities for having made this possible.  Many thanks also to DPC Veterinary Hospital in Hollywood and Dr. Osti at the Pet Doctor of Davie for assisting us on several levels, including getting the word out to trappers that work this zip code, and in providing a large number of the surgeries.”

Trap-Neuter-Release, commonly referred to as TNR is an effective way to control and manage feral and free-roaming cat populations.  The Humane Society of Broward County works with many local TNR groups, providing services for them on a year round basis.  In fiscal year 2013/2014 the HSBC provided a total of 11,415 spay/neuters for the community which includes these dedicated individuals who do TNR.

If you have a pet that needs to be spayed or neutered you can schedule call the HSBC at 954-463-7729 or visit www.humanebroward.com and visit the “services” tab.  Prices start at $15.00 for feral cats.
