The City of Hollywood hosted a Public Safety Open House at the Public Safety Training Facility on Saturday, May 7.

The Hollywood Police Department offered a K-9 Unit demonstration that included descriptions of how the dogs are trained and how they work, followed by a realistic exercise depicting the dogs would be used to arrest someone involved in a criminal act.

Members of the SWAT team were also available to answer questions about their line of work. They demonstrated how a building would be breached and showed rappelling techniques.

Members of the police department were available to visit with the public and answer any questions people might have. The department also showed off some of the vehicles and equipment they use, including the BearCat, an armored car that serves as a mobile command center.

Paul Laskowski, a sergeant on the SWAT Team, was pleased to have the opportunity to meet the community. “This gives us a chance to show the public what we do,” he said.

The Hollywood Fire Rescue & Beach Safety Department was also on hand to offer a demonstration, with firefighters showing how they work together to attack and extinguish large fires. During the event people could see fire trucks up close and were allowed to sit in the vehicles, and firefighters showed children how the fire hoses work.

Joel Medina, Division Chief of EMS and Training for the fire department said, “This allows us to have some fellowship with the community and answer any questions people have.
