Derric Jean, a guard on the McArthur High School Basketball team was named to the Florida Basketball Coaches Association and Source Hopes Class 8A all-state first team basketball team. He accepted a basketball scholarship to Louisiana Tech University. Jean received 14 other scholarship offers. Also, he qualified for the state championship track and field meet in the high jump with a 6.4 foot jump.

Jean has enjoyed success on the basketball court averaging12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. He was a top player on the McArthur team that won three consecutive district championships. Jean was a leading player on a team that qualified for the state final four but lost to Wellington High School, a team that won the state title.

Jean loves basketball and he believes it takes effort to be successful in the game. “You have to stay in shape and be willing to practice for many hours. I am looking forward to going to Louisiana Tech. I will work for my spot. I think I can play there as a freshman but nothing is guaranteed.”

McArthur Head Coach Warren Gale is very proud of this year’s team. “This team had a lot of discipline and worked hard. We had nine seniors that played well together,” said Gale.

Other McArthur players have received basketball scholarships or are considering offers. Corey Brown and Majestic Tejada received scholarships to Northern Arizona University.

“It is the best feeling to have players going on to play college basketball,” said Gale.
