The Friends of the Stirling Road Branch Library are deeply devoted to the library’s success and consider it to be the center of the community which it serves. This week, they held a celebration in honor of National Library Week.
Local families came out to rediscover the Stirling Road Library as a neighborhood resource. “We are recognizing the importance of libraries in our community,” said Fern Canter, a Friends board member. “We have a lot to offer.”
Art, music and culture classes are taught by local experts and professors at the library. There are also book clubs and access to WiFi and computers. Residents who don’t own a computer are welcome to use them at the Stirling Road Library.
Dr. Jacqueline Smith, an assistant principal at Hollywood Hills High School intends to encourage students at her school to come to this library and take advantage of the resources.
Commissioner Dick Blattner said, “The Stirling Road Library is fabulous. The Friends of the Stirling Road Library have done a good job of expanding the horizons of the library,” he said.
Those who came to the event were entertained by a juggler and dulcimer music. There were refreshments, a raffle, and children attending received a free book. Kate McCarthy-Draizin, education manager at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood was on hand to read books to young children in attendance.
In 2015, the Friends of the Stirling Road Branch Library was recognized as the recipient of the Eileen Brunner Membership Development Award, the only Friends Group in Florida to receive such an honor.
