Enjoyed some Instagram Reels in the past and want to rewatch them? You’ve come to the right place. IG Reels allows you to compile your best moments into a video and share them with your followers. Watching other people’s Reels is a great way to explore new ideas and appreciate their creativity.
Despite Instagram not offering a built-in feature to view your watch history, you can still access your complete Reels history for those you liked, commented on, or saved.
Two Ways to Check Your Instagram Reels Watch History
Everything you do on Instagram is recorded from the moment you log in until you log out. Some information can be found in Settings, while other data needs to be downloaded.
If you’ve interacted with any Reels by liking, saving, or commenting on them, there are two methods to view them. However, you won’t see the Reels you only watched.
You can retrieve your Instagram Reels history using the following two techniques:
- Visit Interactions on the Instagram app or website.
- Download your Instagram data.
Accessing a report or viewing the history will provide you with links to all the previous videos you interacted with by liking, commenting, or saving.
Checking Past Reels You Interacted with on the Windows App or a Browser
Instead of downloading your entire Instagram history (we’ll discuss that later), you can view all the Reels you liked, saved, or commented on by accessing them through the Windows app or a browser on Windows, Mac, or Linux. There is a section for “Interactions” and one for “Saved,” both of which include past Reels. While you may not find all the Reels you watched, you can see the ones you interacted with, which are likely the most important videos.
- Log in to your Instagram account on a browser or the Windows app on any device. If you don’t have the Instagram desktop app, a browser like Chrome or Internet Explorer will suffice.
- Click on the “hamburger icon” (More Menu) in the lower-left section.
- Choose “Your Activity.”
- Opt for “Interactions” to see the Reels you commented on, reacted to, or liked,To view the Reels you have saved, you can choose the “Saved” option. Alternatively, click on any video marked with the “Reels icon” to watch it. Look out for the “Multipage icon”, which may indicate a series of sequential video clips or images.
- By downloading your data using the Windows App or a browser, you can access past Reels. To do this, make a formal request to Instagram for your account report. This can be accomplished through the Windows Instagram app or a browser on Windows, Mac, or Linux.Once you’ve obtained the downloaded data, you can locate Reels you engaged with, including likes, comments, and saved reels. Keep in mind that videos only viewed won’t be included in this data retrieval process. Follow the steps below to proceed.
- Access your Instagram account using the Windows app or a Windows, Mac, or Linux browser. If you don’t have the Instagram desktop app, you can use browsers like Chrome or Internet Explorer.
- Locate and click on the “hamburger icon” (More Menu) positioned in the bottom-left corner.
- From the provided options, select “Your Activity”.
- Receiving an official email from Instagram is the key step, then proceed to click on “Download Information.”
- Confirming your email address, selecting either “HTML” or “JSON” format, and then clicking on “Next.”
- Your password needs to be entered, then click on “Request Download.” Instagram will generate your account report and provide an email link, with the time taken dependent on usage.
- Ensuring you follow the official email from Instagram, proceed to click on “Download Information.”
- An official email from Instagram will be received, prompting you to enter your account credentials to confirm your identity. Input the necessary details and then click on the “Log In” button.
- When ready to proceed, you will be redirected to a new page containing your Instagram information. Click on “Download Information”.
- To find the Reels you reacted to, unzip the downloaded file using File Explorer (Windows), Finder (Mac), Files/Nautilus (Linux), or an equivalent file manager. Look in the “Comments,” “Likes,” and “Saved” folders.1
1 Your downloaded Instagram history will contain a mix of Reels, images, stickers, and other elements you interacted with in the “Comments,” “Likes,” and “Saved” folders. Locating Reels may require time as they aren’t explicitly labeled.
One challenge of downloading your Instagram Activities and information is sifting through various data to find past Reels you wish to view. Remember, viewed-only Reels are not saved and won’t be accessible. Instagram retains your interaction history instead of saving all viewed videos due to storage limitations for each user.
Retrieve Past Reels by Downloading Your Data via the Android or iOS App
If you lack the official Instagram app on Mac or Linux, you can download your Instagram data using the Windows app or any browser on a desktop/laptop.
- In the bottom right corner of your screen, tap your profile avatar.
- Open the content management section by tapping the hamburger icon.
- To see your saved past Reels, tap on “Saved”. Reels you reacted to, commented on, or liked can be found under “Your activity” (step-by-step instructions below).
- To expand the saved list, tap the “All Posts” thumbnail.
- To watch the saved thumbnails with the “Reels icon,” or those with the “Multipage icon,” select them.
- To see Reels you interacted with, tap your “profile icon” in the bottom-right corner and exit the “Saved” category.
- To access “Your Activity,” tap the “hamburger icon” and select it.
- Tap on “Likes” to view all the posts and Reels you have liked.
- Select the “Reels icon” to view past Reels or choose those with the “multipage icon” to see previous posts with multiple images and/or videos.
- View the Reels you reacted to or commented on by selecting “Comments”.1
- To find past Reels you reacted to or commented on, select unmarked items (Reels or posts) to view their contents.
1 In “Your Activity -> Comments,” all items are listed without specific labels (Reels, posts, or images). They include all content you reacted to or commented on, in addition to Reels.
If you are unsure if you’ve saved the specific Reel you’re looking for, accessing your saved posts and Reels only takes a few moments, making it worthwhile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are responses to more of your inquiries about Instagram Reels.
Is there an alternative method for accessing my Reels history?
If the methods above aren’t effective for recovering your Reels viewing history, there are other options to explore. Reels are not deleted like Stories unless the original poster removes them, so they should still be available for viewing.
If the previous methods didn’t provide the results you desired, there are still other avenues to explore.
1. If you remember the creator of the Reel, visit their profile and tap on the Reel icon. Browse through the Reels and select the one of interest.
2. Another option is to check any messages between you and another user. You may have sent the Reel to another user, and if so, you can easily access it in the Instagram DMs.
3. Some users have found success by seeking help on Reddit. Post a Looking for post on r/Instagram for assistance.
Relive Your Best Moments
Instagram offers numerous great features, but an official method to view your Reels watch history is unavailable. Instead of relying on chance for old videos to resurface, you can search through your archives to locate them.
You might consider submitting an account data request to Instagram support team for a more efficient method, especially if you have a large number of Reels you’d like to revisit.
Alternatively, check your settings to find saved or liked Reels. If you frequently react or comment on videos, there’s a good chance you’ll find the one you’re searching for.
