McNicol Middle School students participated in a program known as the Kindness Challenge.
Students completed various exercises to encourage empathy and help those in need. They were encouraged to have positive thoughts and attitudes toward fellow classmates. The students also collected hygiene items, such as shampoo and soap for the Broward Outreach Center.
Melissa Goulet, an eighth-grade science teacher at McNicol said, “We want students to say kind words to their fellow students. We want to strengthen peer relations. We want them to feel empathy toward other people.”
Bianca Renteria, an eighth-grade student at McNicol and president of the National Junior Honor Society, helped lead the Kindness Challenge. She and other Honor Society students spearheaded the project. “We collected things to send to the Broward Outreach Center. I think this project has changed us and helped us see the need to care for others,” said Renteria.
Melissa Gurreonero, the principal at McNicol Middle School, was pleased that students embraced the Kindness Challenge. She mentioned that middle school can sometimes be a tough place for students.
“I am excited about this project and I hope it plants a seed among students to be nicer to each other,” said Gurreonero.
The school won $1,000 as part of the Kindness Challenge.
