Memorial Begins Graduate Medical Education with New Residency Programs

Memorial Healthcare System recently celebrated the beginning of its new residency program accepting 31 interns  spread out over four residencies: internal medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation and podiatry.

The first three programs are completely new, and they join the already existing podiatry program.

Dr. Saima Chaudhry, the chief academic officer for Memorial is pleased the new residency programs have been established citing a shortage of doctors in South Florida. “We are transitioning from a community hospital to an academic health center. Our overall plan is to train doctors in over ten residencies and four fellowships.”

That means Memorial will supply Florida with over 75 doctors a year. “Memorial will join a long and prestigious list of public health systems that have a tradition in graduate medical education,” said Chaudhry.

Training has already been provided to about 500 medical students. The residents have graduated from medical schools around the nation and are completing “on the job” training as doctors.

In July 2019 Memorial plans to begin a neurology residency and psychiatry residency program.
