When
I first moved to Hollywood, some 2 ½ years ago, I set out to find two things
pronto—a neighborhood bar and a barber shop!
I
found Downtown Cuts while exploring the Hollywood grid (it’s located at 110 S.
20th between Hollywood Blvd and Harrison Street).
The
place has been grooming since 1946 and one of the cats, Dewey, has been clippin’
there since 1958—can you say old school!
It’s
a quant joint (like those of my youth) 4 or 5 chairs, lots of reading material,
nostalgic photos and knick-knacks—pure comfort.
But
there’s more to Downtown Cuts than the façade of a Rockwellian past. The
current owner, Phil Fuchs (a New York ex-pat), not only brought in his skill-set
but also his twenty-something-son Sammy (a real pro who knows all “today’s” cuts
and styles).
The
price is right, the banter boffo—the mix of clientele as varied as the cutters
themselves.
