At the recent Charter Review Meeting at City Hall, much of the discussion once again centered on protecting the green space at Orangebrook Golf Course. Many of the people who spoke during the meeting said they were concerned about developers converting the land into home developments or other uses.
Many of the speakers wanted the property to remain a 36 hole golf course, while some suggested it might be good to develop half the property and leave an 18 hole course. A few people said that development of the land occupied by Orangebrook should be available for development because new development would be good for the City of Hollywood.
The arguments were nothing new, reiterating the underlying concern that if developers can gain access to the land, Hollywood could lose a major area of green space. The portion of the charter being discussed is about all the green spaces, not just Orangebrook, which is deed restricted. There is talk of adding a hotel to the property, but according to the deed, it is designated as recreational, and a golf course and any major changes would require a referendum and a vote put to the residents of the city.
