Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue Expands in Downtown Hollywood

Shabo’s mediterranean barbecue expands in downtown hollywood

Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue, a popular Downtown Hollywood restaurant that combines authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern recipes and spices with American barbecue classics, recently relocated a few doors east to 1814 Harrison St.

At nearly double the size of the previous location, the new space now offers full bar service, in addition to an outdoor hookah bar.

Chef-owner Shabo Emara continues to offer his unique fusion American and Mediterranean barbecue concept and wide variety of delicious, healthy dishes that have made Shabo’s a big hit with diners who come from as far away as Boca Raton and Homestead.

“I decided to make my menu for everyone. And everyone loves it,” Emara said. “We have a good reputation – and all word of mouth, no advertising.”

After graduating from Cairo Hilton Culinary School in his native Egypt, Emara quickly rose through the kitchen’s ranks, first at the former Hilton Nile and then the Cairo Marriott Hotel, where he mastered classic American country cooking at Roy’s Country Kitchen. In 2009, Emara immigrated to the U.S. to attend the American Hospitality Academy in Naples.

Shabo’s features the authentic flavors of Middle Eastern fare through classic Moroccan, Egyptian and Lebanese recipes, along with grilled kebabs (Mediterranean barbecue) and traditional American country barbecue. Everything is prepared from scratch using the freshest ingredients from local markets, and all meats are Halal certified. There are numerous vegetarian and vegan options, and anything on the menu can be prepared gluten-free upon request.

The extensive menu features brunch items such as Avocado Eggs Benedict ($13.95), Egyptian Egga ($8.95) and Moroccan Shakshuka ($14.95); daily lunch specials (11 am to 5 pm) including burgers, pitas, wraps, quesadillas and “American classics” like Philly Cheese Steak ($7.95 to $14.95); and a vast selection of Mediterranean dips, snacks and sides, add-ons, soups and salads.

Main courses from the grill (starting at $18.95) include kebabs, fish, rib eyes and filet mignon. Among the 20 signature dishes are couscous, tajine, molokhia, makluba, shakshuka, and BBQ beef ribs, chicken or a lamb platter ($14.95 to $22.95). There are also shawarma, gyro and falafel platters ($18.95 to $19.95), and the Chef’s Dinner that includes a beverage, house wine or beer, a choice of appetizer and sides, and a main course of chicken, beef, lamb or mahi-mahi ($29.95).

Shabo’s also offers desserts, exotic signature cocktails and mimosas in several flavors. A classic mimosa special is available until 4 pm daily, and select cocktails, wines and beers are buy one, get one free during happy hours, from 3 to 6 pm daily and 10 pm to closing on Friday and Saturday.

Emara, who has lived in Hollywood for six years, said he chose to open his own business in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district largely because of its ideal location.

“Downtown Hollywood is very close to the airport, the beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami,” Emara said. “Plus, our city is so beautiful. I love Hollywood. It’s home.”

Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue opens daily at 11 am and closes at midnight Sunday – Thursday and 2 am Friday and Saturday. For reservations, call 954-367-2991. For more information, including catering service and cooking classes for kids and adults, visit ShabosBarbecue.com.
