Hollywood residents will be seeing more clearly on city streets as the City has approved a new LED street-lighting program presented by FP&L. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission received a presentation from the Department of Public Works and Florida Power & Light on the LED street light conversion. The plan will convert 5,788 street lights to LED. Hollywood will be the largest municipality served by FP&L to participate in a conversion.
A Tariff was recently approved by the Public Service Commission for the installation of FPL-owned Light-Emitting Diode (LED) street lights in cities and municipalities with no upfront expense to Hollywood. Phase I of the Tariff allows for the conversion of High-Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lights, owned and maintained by FPL under current SL-1 Lighting Tariff, into the LED Streetlights. Phase II of this Tariff would explore the conversion of HPSV lights owned and maintained by City. Fixture selection determines monthly charges. There is a reduced FPL maintenance expense and reduced energy expense which would mean an annual savings of approximately $13,000 for the City.
Some of the benefits include high efficiency improved lighting levels, improved lighting quality and increased energy savings. There will be a reduction of the carbon footprint and more reliability. The lights should last longer and decrease maintenance expense. There should also be a reduction of light pollution and a reduction in crime. It will take four to five months for FP&L to complete final engineering, and installation will take about a year.
“The quality of lighting will be better and brighter and the police department thinks this will have a positive impact on public safety,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. “People have said their neighborhoods are very dark. This will mean an increase in light levels in the neighborhoods.”
