Inspired by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) National Service Animal Eye Exam Event started in 2008, VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital and Animal Eye Guys launched their first Free Eye Exam Event in 2012.
Local service exams are available to ALL service animals in South Florida and provide advanced screening for early detection of potential ocular deficiencies that can hinder the work of these vital working animals.
This year, exams are offered throughout the month of May at Animal Eye Guys of So. Florida and during this dedicated one day event on May 17th at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital. Pre-Registration is required.
Any active working animal that has been certified by a formal training program or organization or are currently enrolled in a formal training program is eligible for the free exam. The certifying organization could be national, regional or local in nature. Examples of active working animals are guide dogs, handicapped assistance animals, detection dogs, therapy animals, emotional support animals and search and rescue dogs.

Early registration is the key to providing these exams to these working animals. To schedule an exam, register online from April 1-30th at www.ACVOeyeexam.org. Then call 954-826-8871 to secure an appointment time.
Dr. Swinger and his team will be checking for problems including redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, early cataracts and other serious abnormalities. Early detection and treatment are vital to these working animals
This event is national in origin which means that service animals around the country can benefit from this ACVO program with Boarded Ophthalmologists in their area. The ACVO website offers a list of participating ophthalmologists throughout the country once the pet is registered. Registration takes less them 3 minutes.
The event is primarily sponsored by ACVO. Other non-profit supporters include the American Veterinary Medical Association, most state veterinary medical associations in the U.S. and Canada, American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives, and other national service animal organizations.
